We spoke with skincare guru and licensed cosmetologist Jen Adkins (also an About.com Skincare Guide) about how to freshen up your skincare and makeup routines for Spring without blowing all of your cash at Sephora. In fact – you can get all of the products Jen recommends at Target or Walgreens. Here’s a few of Jen’s picks for Spring skin on a budget.
- Exfoliate: Get your skin flake-free with a good exfoliation. I recommend exfoliating twice a week year-round to get rid of dry, flaky skin. Try One Sun Drenched Lemon Natural Sugar Scrub, or make your own at home by mixing some of your current body wash with a handful of sugar.
- Moisturize: Immediately after you dry off from your shower, grab a body moisturizer. Locking in moisture is the key to soft, smooth skin. Also, more and more people prefer oils over lotions these days, and for good reason! Lotions contain a high percentage of water, while oils are pure moisture. Try Argan oil(any brand). As you can use it on skin, hair and nails, its literally a head-to-toe beauty product.
- Nail Trends: This spring, nails are all about nudes and pastels. These colors are so easy for everyone to wear and are super flattering on all skin tones. And who can’t afford a new bottle of nail polish? You can now find Essie colors (COAD’s favorite) at Walgreensfor about $8.
- Lip Trends: If you think you can’t pull off red lipstick, think again. There are so many red-toned options right now that you will have no problem finding one to match your skin tone (hint: orangey tones are usually best for lighter skin, and bluer reds for olive skin). L’Oreal in particular has many reds to choose from. Their Infallible Le Rouge line is my favorite lip stain of the moment. It truly lasts all day.
